2023 Kutch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - Kutch Wines

2023 Kutch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The 2023 vintage of the Sonoma Coast bottling of pinot noir from Jamie Kutch comes in at a svelte thirteen percent octane in this vintage. It included fifty percent whole clusters in ’23, was fermented with native yeasts and was raised entirely in older oak. The wine’s aromatic constellation is excellent, wafting from the glass in a sappy blend of red and black cherries, gamebird, woodsmoke, a lovely touch of sweet stem tones, a lovely foundation of soil tones, a dollop of mustard seed and a very gentle framing of cedary oak from the older casks. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, tangy and complex, with a lovely core of fruit, fine focus and grip, impeccable balance and a long, precise and moderately tannic finish. This is an outstanding wine in the making. Though it is certainly approachable and tasty in its youth, the proper course is to tuck it away in the cellar for eight to ten years and let it start to show its secondary layers of complexity.  John Gilman, View from the Cellar 93 Points

Vines planted 1972–1999 at 500–1,400 ft, 3-8 miles from the Pacific on mixed soils. Hand-harvested (like all Kutch wines) 30 August to 26 September. 32 barrels produced.  Transparent garnet. Rich, sweet and easy to like. A bit more of a framework than the Sonoma County bottling. (JR)  Jancis Robin, 16.5 out of 20 Points

2023 Kutch Sonoma Coast Chardonnay - Kutch Wines

2023 Kutch Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

From a vineyard planted in 1972 at 1,400 ft 3.05 miles from the Pacific on Goldridge sandy loam. Having read the back label, I initially thought the fruit was picked on 10 July – but, having worked out the US not UK system of putting the month first (illogical surely?), I realise now it was picked on 7 October! 100% whole-bunch pressed, spontaneous fermentation and malo in French oak barrels (20% new). Minimal sulphites.

Reticent nose with lots of delivery that opened out in the glass. Lightly spicy nose and well-integrated green-fruit flavours on the palate with just a hint of naturalness. Long. More obviously zesty and refreshing than the Leeuwin Art Series 2020 tasted immediately beforehand. Lovely racy acidity but not remotely austere.  Jancis Robinson, 17 out of 20 points

Sourced from the Bohan Vineyard, the 2023 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast serves as a perfect introduction to the exceptional Kutch Chardonnays. A composed bouquet of orchard fruits, honey and dried herbs takes on a
floral dimension with aeration, leading to a seamless, succulent palate that finishes on a refreshing, tangy note.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Matthew Luczy 92 Points

The Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is sourced from the historic Bohan Vineyard, but from more productive blocks that naturally yield bigger crops and deliver a bit more weight. The result is a Chardonnay with more body and fruit presence than the other bottlings. It leans into riper aromas, sweeter florals and fruit, and a broader, almost round mouthfeel. It's a more generous Chardonnay expression of the coast by Kutch.  Decanter Magazine, Ana Carolina Quintela, 91 Points

2023 Kutch Bohan Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - Kutch Wines

2023 Kutch Bohan Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The 2023 Pinot Noir “Bohan Vineyard” bottling from Jamie Kutch is a beautifully refined young wine. Like all of the 2023s here, the wine tips the scales at an extremely civilized thirteen percent octane, included fifty percent whole clusters and saw no new oak casks during its élevage.  The wine’s bouquet is a lovely blend of red and black cherries, sweet beet root, just a touch of pomegranate, pigeon, a touch of graphite, fresh thyme, dark soil tones, a nice dollop of sweet stem tones and the gentle oak influence from older casks. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, soil-driven and sappy at the core, with tangy acids, fine-grained tannins and great focus and grip on the long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. Just a gorgeous wine in the making. Pale crimson. John Gilman, View from the Cellar 95 Points

Not sweet with a distinctly dry finish. Lightly spicy. Discreet with very marked acidity. Needs a little bit oftime. Jancis Robinson, 16.5 out of 20 Points

2023 Kutch Salt Point Block Sonoma Coast Chardonnay - Kutch Wines

2023 Kutch Salt Point Block Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

The Bohan Salty Point Block Chardonnay is bright and slightly reductive.  Tangerine peel, white flowers, melon rind, and a touch of almonds weave through a saline frame, all shaped by 20% new French oak, and a year on lees before resting in stainless. Only 10 barrels were produced. Decanter Magazine, Ana Carolina Quintela, 94 Points

The 2023 Chardonnay Bohan Salt Point Block boasts a beautifully floral and exotic nose, featuring honeysuckle, chamomile and tangerine aromas, followed by a vibrant, cleansing palate rendered with admirable precision and concentration, despite its slender frame. It concludes with a flashy, high-toned finish that lingers with additional floral notes and a gentle, mineral-tinged undercurrent. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Matthew Luczy 94 Points

From a vineyard planted in 2018 at 1,500 feet three miles from the Pacific on Goldridge sandy loam. The fruit was picked on 22 September. 100% whole-bunch pressed, spontaneous fermentation and malo in French oak barrels (20% new). Minimal sulphites added. Kutch explains, 'In 2018 George and Nikki Bohan approached me and asked if I would be interested in a collaboration as they intended on replanting the first vineyard block that George’s father had installed in 1972, having had it succumb to virus. I was ecstatic as I knew that it meant that I could finally propagate some special Chardonnay plant material that I had carried back from Burgundy many years prior. 2021 marks the first vintage of this new vineyard block, aptly named Salt Point as it is one of the closest blocks to the Pacific Ocean and the block resembled a point. Salt Point State Park and beach are also very close neighbours to the property and the beach creates fascinating and rare rock formations called Tafoni. Being a rock lover, the name aptly spoke to me as it also describes the salty character to this mineral-laced Chardonnay.' (Jancis Robinson notes)

Complex, layered, subtle nose with – yes – some burgundian character. Yes it really is a bit salty, I swear! What fun this wine is. Subtly high toned and sleek. There's that lemon and liquorice sensation that one finds in many good white burgundies. Long and excellent. Scrumptious.  Jancis Robinson, 17.5 out or 20

The 2023 Chardonnay Salt Point, from the Bohan Ranch is floral and elegant in the glass.  Citrus peel, marzipan, white flowers and light tropical notes build nicely.  This mid-weight Chardonnay is promising.  Antonio Galloni, (91-93 Point range, tank sample)

2023 Kutch McDougall Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - Kutch Wines

2023 Kutch McDougall Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Given how much warmer the McDougall Ranch is from the Falstaff Vineyard, the fact that both wines come in at an even thirteen percent octane in this vintage speaks well of the precision that the Kutch team could exercise harvesting in this growing season. As is the case with the other 2023 pinots, the wine included fifty percent whole clusters in this vintage, saw no new oak during its élevage and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine delivers a lovely aromatic constellation of black cherries, plums, coffee bean, woodsmoke, fresh thyme, dark soil tones, some sweet stem tones and just a whisper of oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully transparent in its expression of soil tones, with a great core of fruit, fine-grained tannins and great length and grip on the seamlessly balanced and complex finish. This is an utterly brilliant wine in the making! 2035-2080+. John Gilman, View from the Cellar 95+ Points

McDougall Ranch is usually the first pick for Kutch each year, even with being so close to the ocean at just 2.5 miles. But sitting high above the fog at 1,010 feet, it bathes in intense sunshine while catching strong sea breezes. The rocky, sandstone soils also contribute to the character of this wine. You can feel that coastal energy in the glass: lavender, sun-kissed blue and blackberries, a cool freshness, and a salty ocean breeze. On the palate, it carries a bit more power and plushness than other Kutch Pinots, with a deeper core of fruit, a slightly savoury character, and a touch more grip from its tannins.  Decanter Magazine, Ana Carolina Quintela, 95 Points

From a site planted in 1998 at 1010 feet, 3.5 miles from the Pacific. Greywacke/sandstone soils. 50% whole cluster. Very floral and open with sappy red fruits on the nose and hints of pepper and mediterranean herbs. Fine, fresh and supple on the palate with nice acidity. There’s a bit of crunchy structure here and nice acidity. Shows finesse. Jamie Goode, 94 Points

Limpid garnet. Very edgy-but-rich raspberry fruit. Hugely appealing already. Chock-full of fruit and charm. Sonoma Coast rather than Burgundy and none the worse for it. A jewel of a wine hiding its light tannins under all that fruit.  Jancis Robinson, 17 out of 20 Points

2022 Kutch Falstaff Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - Kutch Wines

2022 Kutch Falstaff Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The Falstaff Vineyard has been one of Jamie Kutch’s earliest single vineyard bottlings, as
I first tasted a Falstaff pinot from him all the way back in the 2009 vintage. His 2022 vintage of Falstaff is going to vie with the 2019 and 2021 versions as the very finest I have yet tasted from this superb vineyard. Like the 2021 version, this wine includes fifty percent whole clusters and was raised entirely in used casks. The bouquet is utterly refined, offering up scents of black plums, dark berries, black cherries, coffee bean, just a touch of fresh thyme, a complex base of dark soil tones, woodsmoke, just a hint of cedar and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and very refined on the attack, with a gorgeous core of sweet black fruit, lovely transparency and grip, tangy acids, fine-grained tannins and a very long, seamlessly balanced and complex finish. This is a brilliant young pinot noir! 2033-2080.  95+ Points John Gilman, View from the Cellar

Transparent crimson. Savoury, herbal nose. Very refreshing and finely balanced. Sufficient fruit concentration to overcome the tannin. Appetising dry finish. You could enjoy this wine already! Although there is a sufficient array of ingredients to suggest that the wine will age well.  17 out of 20 Jancis Robinson

The 2022 Pinot Noir Falstaff Vineyard is bright and effusive right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, white pepper, mint and orange peel all confer brightness. Medium in body and light on its feet, the Falstaff is sublime. It's also one of the more approachable wines in this lineup of 2022s. The 50% stems are very nicely integrated.  92 Points Vinous

2023 Kutch Falstaff Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - Kutch Wines

2023 Kutch Falstaff Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The always very cool Falstaff Vineyard ripened up its pinot noir very nicely in 2023, as this wine comes in at a full thirteen percent octane in this vintage. I have been a huge fan of this bottling from Jamie since I first tasted his 2009 version in the early days and the 2023 is another absolutely stellar young pinot. The bouquet here is pure and complex, offering up scents of red and black cherries, pomegranate, a touch of raw cocoa, pigeon, sweet stem tones, a gorgeous foundation of soil, marjoram, peonies, just a whisper of oak influence and a topnote of distant bonfire. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely structured this year, with a fine core of fruit, superb soil inflection and grip, ripe, buried tannins, good acids and lovely balance on the long, nascently complex and very promising finish. This is going to be a stunning wine once it blossoms!   John Gilman, View from the Cellar 95 Points

A beautiful counterpoint to the more powerful and slow-moving McDougall bottling, the 2023 Pinot Noir Falstaff Vineyard is intensely focused and mineral-driven on the nose, gradually developing additional notes of fresh herbs and dried flowers. The palate is admirably sleek and tensile, seamlessly moving into a soaring, mineral-driven and focused finish. The energy here is palpable, delivered with patience and elegance. I look forward to following this in the cellar over the next decade.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Matthew Luczy 94+ Points

Vines planted in 1999 at 505 ft 8.2 miles from the Pacific on Goldridge soils and exposed to cold and fog. Kutch’s coolest site. Picked 19 September and made like the Sonoma County bottling. 14 barrels produced. Transparent, shaded blueish garnet. Marked acidity and structure. Needs time – the polar opposite of the McDougall Ranch bottling. Not that much length. (JR)   Jancis Robinson, 16.5 out of 20 Points

2023 Kutch Mindego Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir - Kutch Wines

2023 Kutch Mindego Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

The 2023 vintage has turned out beautifully in the Mindego Ridge Vineyard, at least based on this excellent young wine. As these pinot noir vines were planted in 2009, they are just starting to come into their prime now. The wine was handled similarly in the cellars to most of the other single vineyard pinots, with fifty percent whole clusters, no new oak and fermentation with native yeasts. The 2023 is beautifully black fruity in personality this year, offering up scents of sweet dark berries, black cherries, stony minerality, espresso, woodsmoke, a nice touch of stems, discreet cedary tones and an incipient touch of the cola notes to come with bottle age. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, tangy and mineral-driven in personality, with a great core of fruit, ripe, buried tannins, superb focus and grip and a long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. I love the spine of structural undercarriage that the Santa Cruz Mountains impart in this superb young wine!  John Gilman, View from the Cellar 94+ Points

The 2023 Pinot Noir Mindego Ridge Vineyard showcases the site's distinctive bouquet of bay laurel and coniferous overtones, set against a backdrop of red and blue fruits. The palate is tender and polished, culminating in a juicy yet powerful finish that beautifully balances high-toned energy with deep, grounded intensity. It's a beautiful and accurate rendition of one of Santa Cruz Mountains' most sought-after vineyard sources.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Matthew Luczy 94 Points

Very pale garnet. Earthy, herbal nose with dry fruit in reserve. In some ways more complex than the Sonoma Coast bottlings. Finishes dry but promising! Very vigorous and structured without being demanding.  Jancis Robinson, 17 out of 20 Points

2022 Kutch Graveyard Block Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - Kutch Wines

2022 Kutch Graveyard Block Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

94+ Points John Gilman, View from the Cellar - Interestingly, the Graveyard Block in the Bohan Vineyard was only planted in 1988, making it substantially younger than the rest of the pinot noir vines here. The soil is also different from the main vineyard, as this is Sandstone, rather than the classic Goldridge found in so many vineyards along the Sonoma Coast. The wine is completely destemmed, fermented with native yeasts and raised entirely in neutral oak barrels. The bouquet is deep and sappy, wafting from the glass in a mix of black cherries, black plums, raw cocoa, fresh thyme, dark soil tones, woodsmoke and peonies. On the palate the wine is pure, precise and full, with a sappy core of black fruit, lovely soil undertow and grip, fine-grained tannins, lovely balance and focus and a long, complex and utterly seamless finish. This is another absolutely beautiful young pinot noir from Jamie Kutch.

94 Points Vinous - The 2022 Pinot Noir Bohan Vineyard Graveyard Block is a tiny blend of four barrels from a block planted in 1988. It is also the only Kutch Pinot done with fully destemmed fruit. A blast of dark blue/black fruit, gravel, menthol, cloves, licorice and incense races across the palate, announcing a Pinot endowed with notable structure and gravitas. This is beautifully done.

17+ out of 20 Jancis Robinson - Mid purplish crimson. Complex nose with a distinctly tactile texture and the fruit far from the dominant feature. There's quite a bit in reserve here. And real depth and sweetness.
